Pet Dog Advice For The New Pet Owners

When it comes to dogs as pets I like to think at least that I may know a thing or two about having dogs as we now have three dogs in the house under the age of five. So I thought today I would impart some friendly pet advice to anyone considering a dog as a new pet or adding another dog to the family pet collection. Like I said we have three dogs in our house now Bailey who is a full Cocker Spaniel, Milo who is a mutt of Boxer and Rhodesian ridge-back then our newest edition Harley another mutt of Labrador and any one’s guess is as good as ours on him.

OK for those getting a first dog I will start with Bailey our Cocker Spaniel. He is the first dog I have ever had and unfortunately at the time I had no idea what I was doing. I got him from a pet store and yes I have learned my lesson and both of our other dogs are rescued dogs. So don’t get your dogs from a pet store! What a difference in training Bailey coming from a pet store little window box had a terrible time with his crate training and learning the rules of the house. Still he is my first dog so and the one we learned the most from and we would not change a thing.

bblueAdding a second and third dog. Milo was first and we found him as a pup at only 7 pounds but because he was being raised with his mom on a farm. Milo really had no issues with crate training or learning to ring the bell to go outside. Incredible difference from Bailey and the pet store habits he picked up. Introducing the dogs was not that big of deal since Bailey is a relatively small dog and easy to control. We did not bring Harley into the mix until Milo was a good two years old. So needless to say he was a bit bigger and more of a concern bringing in a new puppy into his domain as he had established doggy dominance in the house.

Depending on the size of your dogs really determines the amount of time and care you need to spend watching them when introducing a new dog to the mix. Also if you are new to bringing dogs into your house be prepared to accept that things are going to get chewed, knocked down, peed or pooped on. Especially in the early stages as you teach them the rules of the house. If you are not willing to accept these things as fact and just clean up the mess you might want to consider getting something other than a dog.
